America's European allies have called for lowering escalation on all sides after Iran's promise to retaliate for the murder of the country's top general by the United States. Qasssem Solemann was killed in a raid on Baghdad Airport on Friday.
Protests have erupted throughout the Middle East, and as reported by Henry Ridgwell of London, NATO has suspended its training mission in Iraq due to growing concerns of an escalation of violence.
While European allies of America were not given preliminary warning of the attack on Iran's top general ... British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his country “would not mourn” Solejman's death.
Britain, like the United States, is among the countries that suffered from its actions, analysts say.
“Qassem Solejmani has been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops and other Western troops, including those British”, says Karen von Hippopel with the United Royal Services Institute.
While tens of thousands of people mourned in Iran, Britain, France and Germany issued a joint statement calling on all sides to exercise maximum restraint and responsibility.
The European Union has invited Tehran's foreign minister to Brussels in an effort to calm tensions.
“There is a mutual consensus that engagement must continue, but it is on the Iranian side to announce to us how they want to continue”, says Peter Stano, spokesman for the European Commission.
Europe hopes that the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran can be saved despite Tehran's announcement that it will now not accept all restrictions on its nuclear enrichment activities.

Iran has promised military revenge, and America's allies are also concerned that they might be targeted.
NATO has suspended its training mission in Iraq, with several hundred troops part of the Western coalition to defeat the Islamic State.
The alliance's secretary general refused to comment Monday whether NATO allies will support the United States in any conflict with Iran.
“We have recently seen an escalation from Iran, including attack on a Saudi energy object and the collapse of an American threat. At our meeting today, the Allies called for content and reduced tensions. A new conflict would not be in anyone's interest”, Secretary Stoltenberg said.
Russia and China condemned the murder of Soleman. Analysts say Tehran can now seek greater support from its allies.
Before this escalation, China, Russia and Iran held joint naval maneuvers in the Persian Gulf and Oman Bay”, says Holly Dagres with the Atlantic Council.
In the Middle East, anti-American protests have spread from Iran and Iraq to Turkey, Palestinian territories and Lebanon.
Protesters also took to the streets in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Israel, Iran's longtime enemy, praised the United States' move.
President Trump's “deserves all the assessments after he acted decisively, strength and speed”, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah said.
All eyes are now on Iran and whether it will pay attention to global calls for content, or it will fulfill its promise of revenge.
