German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated on Saturday the call to all sides respecting the nuclear agreement with Iran. A few days ago Tehran announced it would withdraw further from commitments under the deal, enriching uranium without restrictions.
Under an agreement brokered in 2015, Iran agreed with China, France, Germany, Russia, Britain and the United States to limit its nuclear programme.
We agreed to do everything to keep the deal. Germany is convinced Iran should not have nuclear weapons“, Mrs. Merkel said during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday.
For this reason we will continue all diplomatic efforts to keep this agreement alive, which is certainly not perfect, but is an agreement and includes commitments from all sides“, as she said.
Unlike the United States, which on Friday imposed new economic sanctions on Iran, Europeans have given Tehran more time to avoid producing nuclear weapons on its part.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also indicated that peace talks in Libya will be held in Berlin, at a time when both Ankara and Moscow have called on warring factions there to reach a ceasefire agreement.
Mrs. Merkel said “we hope that joint efforts by Russia and Turkey will be successful and that invitations will soon be sent to a conference in Berlin “.
