Russia's President Vladimir Putin is standing on a visit to Syria, where he met with the president, Bashar al-Assad, and held consultations with Russian military officials in Damascus.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow that Putin traveled by vehicle to the streets of the Syrian capital from Damascus International Airport to the headquarters of the Russian Armed Forces group.
Peskov said Putin met Assad at the headquarters building.
The “leaders (Putin and Assad) jointly heard military reports of developments in various regions of the country”, Peskov said.
Putin's visit was not warned earlier.
Russia is the main ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose military forces are fighting rebels who oppose his regime.
Idrib to the northwest of Syria is the last major region held by rebels opposing President Bashar al-Assad.
The Russian-backed Syrian government has bombed Idlibin since late November.
More than 235,000 people have fled their homes in the province of Idlib, Syria.
Exodus occurred between December 12th and 25th.
US President Donald Trump has warned Russia, Syria and Iran against killing civilians in Syria's Idlib province and has said Turkey is working hard to stop “Masacre”.
Russia, Syria and Iran are either killing or in the direction of killing thousands of innocent civilians in the province of Idlib. Don't do this! Turkey is working hard to stop this” massacre, Trump said in a post on the social network, Twitter, on December 26th. /rel
