The mysterious virus can spread to the world after the new Chinese year

Because of the release of a new virus unknown to scientists so far, health care professionals worldwide are on alert.

Is this just a new virus that has emerged today, and will it disappear or be the first sign of something far more dangerous?

What kind of virus is it?

Doctors sent virus samples, received from patients for analysis. Officials in China and scientists at the World Health Organization have concluded that it was a coronary infection.

Coronavirus are broad - spectrum viruses, and only six are known to touch people. The new virus would be seventh.

The acutely severe respiratory syndrome (SARS), caused by a coronary, killed 774 out of 8,098 people infected in the 2002 epidemic in China.

“We remember THE SARS is both good and fearful, but now we are much better prepared to deal with these types of diseases,” says Dr. Joyce Golding of Wellcome Trust, a London-based NGO dealing with the health of humans and animals.

How serious is it?

Coronavirus can cause symptoms ranging from mild cold to death. This new virus seems somewhere in the middle.

When we hear of a new coronary, we want to know how severe the symptoms are, this is more than a cold symptom and it worries us, but it's not as serious as SARS”, says Professor Mark Woolhouse of the University of Edinburgh.

Where did the virus come from?

New viruses appear over and over again. They overtake people from other species.

What animal transmits this virus?

Is It Easy to Spread?

The new virus does not appear to be transmitted from person to person. However, some experts warn that it may be too early to know if the virus can be transmitted to humans.

“Positive is that we haven't seen a spread of affairs”, says Dr. Golding. “Kina takes this seriously and has a potential for infection. We have to wait and see”.

However, there are concerns that the virus could spread to hundreds of millions of people travelling for the New China Year later this month, the BBC writes.

How concerned are experts?

At this point, until we have more information, it's really hard to know how worried we should be”, Golding says.

Professor Jonathan Bol said we should take care of every virus we test for the first time on people”.
