Today, a powerful quake of 6.2 magnitude struck the northwest of Indonesia. The mighty seismic swing was at a depth of 20 kilometers, 12.5 miles off the coast of Simeulue Island, west of Sumatra.
Currently, no lost or injured lives are reported, as well as no warning of a possible tsunami. Similarly, infrastructure damage is not yet being discussed in local media.
Indonesia is characterized by high seismic and volcanic activity, because it is positioned at “Fire Ring” of the Pacific, where tectonic plates crash. In 2018 more than 2,200 people died and another 1,000 were declared missing as a result of an earthquake of 7.5 Magnitudes and a subsequent tsunami on the island of Sulawesi.
