China's National Health Commission revealed that 132 people have died from the new virus until 5,974 cases have been confirmed as infected.
Some 9,200 alleged respiratory cases are being monitored, the government health authority said in a statement on January 29th.
Tens of cases have also been confirmed outside China's territory, including in Europe, North America, and elsewhere in Asia.
The total number of confirmed cases now exceeds SARS, another respiratory disease that killed more than 600 people worldwide in 2002-2003.
Symptoms of the new type of coronary include fever, coughs and respiratory barriers.
Authorities have closed access to 17 towns in the province of Hubei, where it is believed to be the origin of the virus.
Foreigners have begun leaving the virus-hit province where more than 50 million people have been blocked.
The World Health Organization has recognised the outbreak of the virus as a national emergency, but has not yet declared it an international emergency.
