How do airlines select films for travelers?

Singapore Airlines employs 70 film professionals working in different countries around the world.

Deputy Chairman of the Ngo Yung Han Production Innovation Commission says the Film Review Board meets once a month in Singapore. Foreign committee members submit their opinions via email.

“Options and criticisms of committee members help us gain knowledge of all the content of world-renowned films. Many films raise controversy in individual countries. Committee members help us make the best decisions and offer the titles of our current and quality film to our passengers”, Han said.

Population, prices and compliance with cultural norms are the most important standards during selecting a film. Singapore Airlines says recent films will arrive no later than three months from the premiere.

Customers' wishes are also an important factor when choosing films. The company tries to process reactions regarding the entertainment content and cannot meet the travel demands immediately.

If there is sufficient demand to broadcast a special display, the passenger will likely be able to enjoy the film requested on the next flight.

Emirates was the first company to place screens in aircraft locations in 1992. A relatively small number of eight members is responsible for the selection. Their work is based on watching and selecting films and catching travel comments.

Some companies edit film lists depending on the way the plane moves. Passengers in Emirates have a base of 700 titles at all times, regardless of where the aircraft is currently located and where travelers come from.

Simon Cuthbert is the manager in charge of the fun at Cathay Pacific. He says successful selection of the film relies on a balance between two factors of language and voices.
