Kosovapress: Mr. Why didn't you publish the list for deputies the day they published other subjects, but two days later?
Wessel: The list of candidates of the Democratic Party of Kosovo for MPs is best and represents Kosovo citizens worthy. It is a list of confidence and courage to act on the major reforms that must take place in our country. We have done this list very carefully and have given space to the largest new frameworks that have joined the Democratic Party of Kosovo. If you carefully analyze it, there are 68 candidates for deputies competing for the first time on the PDK list, and there are over 40 young candidates. Besides, we have a very qualitative representation of women. Most important, on the PDK list, there is no candidate for MPs who have an indictment of corruption, nepotism or misuse of official office -- a pledge I have made now and several months.
Kosovapress: What was the message you wanted to convey to the Convention where you were nominated for the prime minister?
Wessel: The message was that only those who recognise Kosovo's journey accept values, beat, sacrifice, successes and mistakes. They know exactly what the best course our country should take. We all need to know that October 6th is not just a day of voting. It is a referendum on Kosovo's future. If we want to move strongly towards Euro-Atlantic travel, towards confronting the real challenges of corruption, nepotism, abuse, failure and endangerment of the state. Or, let's get into dilemmas, conflicts and escape from responsibilities. Before us lies a historical turning point. And, at such moments, what always emerges is the Democratic Party of Kosovo, which has the courage and team prepared to realise the vision of our citizens.
Kosovapress: In your speech at the Convention, you stinged your political opponents that they could not lead with the country. On what do you base those statements?
Wessel: In two decades of freedom, and a decade of independence, the Democratic Party has led crucial processes for Kosovo. Others have either complained or just watched us and tried to judge us. But they have done little or nothing. There were also those who tried to deny and destroy what we have built for 20 years. Even today, they are not able to meet the challenges of the State. Either you lack courage or choose the wrong way. Kosovo cannot be led by someone who goes into debt to the leader and the party, more than by citizens and Kosovo. Not those who dare not make decisions. Kosovo's prime minister should answer only the people of Kosovo and the needs of citizens. The future cannot be built for the state of Kosovo by those who suspect it, who deny the identity of the state of Kosovo, from those who have no heart to bring up the Kosovo flag. A future can't be built here by those who plot and violate partnership with the United States of America and the European Union. A future cannot be built here by those who have no will and courage to fight corruption, nepotism and abuse of power. If we want to fight corruption, the first thing is to accept the problem and start changing from home. Because, all Kosovo parties have been and are in power and have made and made mistakes. But, the PDK is the only party that has both the will and the courage to correct these mistakes. We have a plan to fight corruption, how to keep our young people here, how to build a future.
Kosovapress: In every appearance you're talking about fighting corruption, but your party has mostly been accused of this phenomenon. How will you fulfill that promise?
Wessel: All my life, I have lived working for Kosovo. I've never been afraid to fight for my country. Not when we founded the Kosovo Liberation Army, nor now when it needs to fight corruption and develop our country. I've never acted just to make my dream happen. But always based on a desire and common dream of our nation. Even today, our dream, our vision, has nothing to do with October 6th. It's much bigger than that. Long before I knew there was a choice, I decided to act against corruption phenomenon and fraud with veterans' lists. Long before I knew there would be a choice, I decided to dismiss any who were guilty of corruption and nepotism. Because I believed that to make the difference, we have to start with ourselves. Other parties looked at, described and charged, but you see the effect is being achieved. As a new ethical standard in politics set by the PDK, there will be no people with charges in institutions. Long before I knew there would be elections, I promoted young people to leadership positions in Government and the PDK, giving them the chance. They testified to themselves. They saved millions of euros from Kosovo's budget, fighting corruption and turned them into good for citizens.
Kosovapress: If you take the citizens' trust to lead the future government, what government will you create?
Wessel: The government I will lead will be a Government with new ministers working for citizens. It's going to be Government mostly young sometimes. Me and the PDK believe in young people and give them the space they deserve, unlike other parties that take them away. It will be government with ministers without charges of corruption and nepotism. A government that will be small in number, but very efficient and involved in the work. A government that will not abuse citizens' taxes, but will protect them. The government that will lead it will be extenuating to existing businesses and helping them with a strategic, precise and concrete plan, in line with the needs of citizens, market demands and economic development. This government will build the best today and a secure future. We will strengthen our cooperation with the United States. The EU and free democracies, bringing in foreign investors, increasing competition and releasing the creative spirit of youth.
Kosovapress: Mr. Wessel, you have recently entered politics and it is the first time you have been targeting the prime minister's position. What made you believe in victory on October 6th?
Wessel: I've entered the race for Prime Minister with a clear purpose. Kosovo cannot turn back. Kosovo cannot stop. Kosovo cannot remain isolated. Kosovo must move forward. October 6th is a chance you can't lose. I know that many citizens are disappointed by politics and today do not believe in it. I know why. And I know the answer. We definitely need an ethical code in politics. We need more honor, trust and courage. And I assure all citizens that with a good policy, all challenges are overcome, all problems solved and the dreams of youth come true. I have fought and fought with all my heart, with all my citizens to develop our country. I have never lied to the citizens of my country, even though I may not have known to tell the truth properly. I have entered the war for Kosovo. Today I am in politics for Kosovo and only for Kosovo. I only answer the citizens, my nation and the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo. I will not stop until the end in my fight for a Western Kosovo, developed, without corruption, with powerful economies and equal members of the European family. Therefore, for the benefit of Kosovo, for the benefit of children, women and men, young and old, I call on all citizens to become together and build the future.
