United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has opened the annual debate of the General Assembly in New York, presenting a faintly summary of the situation in the world.
He said the world is deeply divided and concerned in the face of a climate crisis, the spread of terrorism, rising inequality and “alarming” of a conflict in the Persian Gulf.
Describing the attack on oil objects in Saudi Arabia as unacceptable “”, Guterres called on world leaders to use “reason and content” in the Middle East.
Tensions in the region have escalated following the 14 September attack on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.
The United States, Saudi Arabia and Western European countries have blamed Iran, which denies any involvement.
American President Donald Trump has said he would talk about Iran during his speech at the UN Assembly later in the day.
Many things are happening about Iran, much more than you would know, much more than the media” know, Trump said.
Tensions between Tehran and Washington have escalated since the United States last year withdrew from the 2015 international agreement between Iran and world powers, through which Iran agreed to halt its nuclear activities in exchange for an easing of sanctions.
Since then, the United States imposed sanctions on the Iranian economy, and Iran began to reduce some of its commitments under the nuclear agreement. /rel
