The U.S. Coast Guard reported that five crew members managed to escape from the ship, but 33 passengers and another crew member have been found dead or are still missing.
After the search operation by rescue teams, 25 lifeless bodies were found, while other nine people are also believed to have died. Coast Guard official Matthew Kroll said the bodies found have signs of death from sinking in the water.
At the time of the fire, the small ship was near Santa Cruz Island, not far from Barbara and Los Angeles.
The first bodies found Monday were two men and two women, but authorities said the DNA test to identify them must be carried out. Officials gave no further details about missing persons, saying that the passengers were from the southern part of California and some remote parts.
Also at the scene was Congresswoman Julia Brownley, who said: “unfortunately, we've experienced two major fires in California, but we've never faced such an emergency”, writes the “The Guardian.
