These statements come after U.S. media quotations that the US is ready to withdraw a large number of troops from Afghanistan in exchange for competing negotiations by Taliban with Kabul to end the 18-year war.
The Washington Post newspaper and CNN news agency have cited sources, saying the number of soldiers would range from 14,000 to 8,000 as part of the peace agreement to end the conflict.
Washington said the agreement with the Taliban should be finalised by early September.
When asked by reporters for troop withdrawal, Trump did not specify the exact number, but told reporters it would decrease.
We've been there for 19 years. We're serving as cops. We could have healed Afghanistan in a few days if we wanted to, but I'm not interested in killing 10 million people”, Trump said, broadcast rap.
The United States and the Taliban, since September, have held eight rounds of peace talks. Both sides have announced progress in talks on a possible deal. The US has promised it can withdraw troops if the Taliban do not allow Afghanistan to be used as the basis for terrorism.
The Taliban have refused to negotiate directly with the Western-backed government in Kabul, calling it illegal.
