Secretary - General NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has said that “we see a more unpredictable and uncertain world”.
Speaking at the Centre for Strategic Studies at the Victoria University of New Zealand, he said that along with competition among major powers, terrorism and internet security are the other main challenges facing NATO.
“Internet is essentially changing the nature of conflict, like the industrial revolution that changed the nature of the pre-World War I conflict”, Stoltenberg said.
He blamed Russia for violating the 1987 nuclear arms treaty by placing new missiles, a claim Moscow denies.
Russia has said that the United States abandoned the pact in order to start a new arms race.
Speaking of other world crisis sites, Stoltenberg said the alliance's presence in Afghanistan is to ensure that the country “does not again become a safe haven for international terrorists”.
He expressed concern about Turkey's decision to purchase a Russian air defence system because, according to him, these “equipment will not be integrated into the integrated air defence and missile system that we already have alliances have in Europe”.
