Mr. Putin told his National Security Council that Russia cannot stand back, and that US statements to install new missiles in the Asia-Peacekeeping region affect Russia's basic interests.

US Defence Secretary Mark Esper recently said it is in favour of deploying medium-range missiles to Asia. Meanwhile, President Putin complained this week that the United States is now ready to install a new land-based missile in Romania and Poland.
The United States has said it has no close plans to install new missiles in Europe.
