Social workers say that among the reasons parents push to abandon their children is the serious economic situation in Kosovo. According to Labour and Social Management Ministry officials, only in the first six months of this year in our country have 16 newborn children been abandoned.
Lutfi Bislimi, official for family housing and foster care of children without parental care in the Minister of Labour and Social Management, told Radio Kosovo that based on data from the previous years, this year there is an increase in the number of abandoned children.
“Based on reports by municipal social work centres for the January-June 2019 period, there are 16 abandoned children. Based on this first quarter of this year's data, we have an increasing number of abandoned children”, Bislim said.
Social worker in the QKUK's Gynecology Department, Hafize Hamza-Geci, told Radio Kosovo that in the first six months of this year, eight newborn babies have been abandoned by their parents at this clinic. She added that the serious economic situation is the impact of abandoning children.
“We have numerous reasons that parents declare in abandoning their children, but more often are the serious socioeconomic situation, then the unwanted and unplanned animal, and the partner's unwillingness to take responsibility for a child out of wedlock or after the breakup of a couple, these are among the reasons parents push them to abandon their children”, Hamza-Geci said.
Even Besnik Peci, head of alternative care in “SOS Children's villages” said that compared to last year, the number of abandoned children placed in “are raised. Sos Village”
During the first six months of 2019 in “SOS Kosovo Children's Villages” we have 8 new admissions of children who were abandoned or needed housing in “Sos Village”, Peci declared.
From the Ministry of Labour and Social Management say that by referring to regular monthly lists for potential foster families, there is great interest in adopting abandoned children. And they say gender preference is for both genders.
