In a broad interview with the BBC, Stoltenberg said Russian missiles, which claim to be in the <x0 clear violation of the treaty”, are capable of nuclear, mobile, very difficult to detect and able to reach European cities within minutes.
“We should be prepared for a world without the INF treaty and with more Russian missiles”, he said.
While NATO has no plans to deploy European-based nuclear missiles, Stoltenberg said the alliance would respond to a “cautious and protective approach” if Russia refused to honour the agreement by 2 August.
The agreement signed by the US and the Soviet Union in 1987 halted short and medium-range nuclear missiles.
President Trump announced that the US would withdraw from the Treaty of Middle Nuclear Forces (INF) in February, accusing Russia of violating it.
Russia denied the charges, but suspended its obligations shortly thereafter and announced plans to develop new weapons systems.
