The demonstrations in Hong Kong began peacefully but were overcome by violence over time. Protesters fired umbrellas at police, who responded with tear gas, Reuters reports.
Even today, protests began peacefully, but when the police asked them to leave the square, violence began. By 20:30 local time, most special police had landed in the square, trying to control the crowd.
Protests in the former British Colonel are continuing for more than a month, causing this to be the biggest political crisis in the city since 1997, when even the city was handed over to China.

All of this was because Hong Kong was a colony of Great Britain until 1997. In an agreement between China and Britain, Hong Kong was allowed to maintain its political system but to be part of the Chinese state.
And this law, by citizens, is seen as legitimising the rule of communism in a democratic city.
