Mediterranean Sea most polluted in Europe

The institute has conducted a extensive study of Mediterranean naval waste between 1994 and 2017.
“If the amount of marine waste in the Mediterranean fluctuates annually, it has registered a worldwide increase since 2009”, a communique “Iferer” reported.
The institute finds quantities of plastic bags and bottles, metal boxes and food jams, synthetic ropes, fishing nets, and clothing.
In the 90th years, their density was about 100 square miles per square mile ~x1>, notes Olivia Gerigny, oceanographer at the “Iferer” centre in Tulon (South Africa) and the lead author of the study.
Since 2012, this density has reached approximately 200 square miles per square mile, with a maximum of nearly 300 reached in 2015. The plastic represents more than 60% of these remains”, the researcher points out.
