Joachim Gauck was saved after his boat was overturned by streams of water in shallow waters.
Federal Criminal Police (BKA) said the boat was overturned in calm waters near the town of Wusrow of the Baltic Sea, about 40km northeast of Rostock.
“The politician and civil rights activist was only on board when the” incident occurred, the BKA added.
Otherwise, 79-year-old knew by nickname “Stasi Hunter”, for his investigative work on uncovering crimes of the Communist-era secret police.
