At least 65 people have died after an alleged attack by the Islamist group Boko Haram against a group of people returning from burial in the northeastern Borno region in Nigeria, state television reported on Sunday.
The Islamist group did not immediately assume responsibility, but the Boko Haram group and its rival Islamic State in West Africa (Iswa) have usually made terrorist attacks in that area.
Local government chief Mohammed Bulama was quoted as saying the attackers killed 21 people who were returning from burial in the vicinity of a village.
And 44 others drowned after trying to regroup and defend themselves. Others were injured, he said, implying that the death toll could increase, Periscopi writes.
Nigeria's president, Muammadu Buhari, on Sunday condemned the attack and ordered the army to pursue the attackers.
The state of Borno is the focus of Boko Haram and Iswa's uprising. The conflict has lasted for decades during which military periods have killed thousands, while millions have fled their homes.
The Nigeria Army denied giving a comment. /Periscope
