The BBC found content of the injuries people cause to themselves and punishments for over-food in MywitnessPal, Lose It! And Lifesum.
The eating disorder organisation Beata said apps can exacerbate unhealthy behavior and make recovery more difficult.
App developers said they promoted healthy food and have undertaken protective measures to provide protection for sensitive users.
A BBC investigation found more than 20 harmful notes created by MyFitnessPal users, Lose It! or Lifesum, including some dangerous promotions of hunger.
