The department authorised the possible sale of 108 Abrams tanks, 250 Stinger rockets and other equipment, and announced Congress.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang called on the United States to cancel the sale, saying Beijing strongly opposes the move.
China considers Taiwan a backlash province and has never given up its possible use of force to regain control of the island.
Taiwan's president's office expressed gratitude for the U.S. Government for the sale of weapons.
“Taiwan will speed up defence investments and will continue to deepen security ties with the United States and countries with similar ideas”, the spokesman said.
China- The US has been tense in recent months because of trade and what Washington considers to be Chinese militarism in the South China Sea. /tch/
