The mosque, which was discovered on the eve of new construction in the Bedouin Rahat town of the Negev desert, was built in the 7th or 8th century, Reuters reports.
“There are large mosques known to exist from that period in Jerusalem and Mecca, but rarely is there an ancient Islamic temple, which is likely to belong to a community of local farmers”, Gideon Avni said by the Authority for Antiquities.
This is one of the oldest known mosques since Islam's arrival in Israel, following the Arab occupation in 636,” said Avni.
The discovery of the ancient mosque is an important contribution to the study of history during this turbulent” period, he added.
