Climate change is projected to create a more powerful and extreme meterological system across the globe, so many coastal areas are thought to be building protective structures to reduce its impact.
The first clays were built several centuries ago, yet today they may be the most valuable assets ever in the defense of people living in endangered coastal areas.
A recent climate protection centre report estimated that protection of coastal communities could cost the United States more than $400 billion over the next 20 years.
The clays are not only expensive to create but also need regular maintenance in order to cope with the wave crash. In many places, however, they are considered vital to protecting land and property that would otherwise be swallowed up by water.
