Iranian authorities have announced that a 5.7-degree Ricter earthquake has hit a town in the southwestern part of this state on Monday. This quake has damaged some buildings.
According to the state news agency report, I The RNA, the quake has been recorded near the town of Masjid Solemann in the province of Khuzstan, about 450 kilometers south of Tehran, the capital of Iran. At least four people have reportedly suffered injuries.
Witnesses told of some Western news agencies that some buildings in downtown have been damaged by the quake, while some old buildings have collapsed completely.
State television reported that rescue teams have gone to the area affected by the earthquake.
Based on the U.S. Institute for Geological Surveys, this earthquake's focus was 28 miles [28 km] southeast of Masjid Solemann, at a depth of ten miles [10 km] below the surface of the earth.
In 2003, a 6.6 - degree earthquake had hit the historic city of Bam in southern Iran, leaving 26 thousand dead.
