A total of 44,000 healthy women aged 35 to 74 were examined for the study.
Many of them, about 17,000, slept with a small room lamp such as that of an alarm clock, while over 13,000 left light lit outside the room while about 5,000 slept with a television or a monitor on in the bedroom.
At the beginning of the study, participants were in many cases overweight, but still not obese, and no one has worked in shifts, which can interrupt sleep cycles.
After almost six years of monitoring, those who slept with a TV or a light in the room showed that they had 22% more chances of being overweight and 33% are more likely to be obese than those who slept in the dark.
“The removal of all sleeptime lights could reduce women's chances of becoming obese”, noted Yong-Moon Park, a researcher at the National Institute of Health in North Carolina, U.S.A.
