Justice Minister Abelard Tahiri and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer have signed today the protocol of the ratification instruments of the extradition agreement between Kosovo and the United States of America.
Minister Tahiri has stressed that the signing marks a historic case for bilateral relations between the two countries in the area of judicial co-operation.
The “Treaty reflects the new reality in the Balkans and this agreement further strengthens the rule of law and subjectivity of Kosovo, making it a reliable partner in the fight against transnational crime”, he said.
The treaty, according to Minister Tahiri, is a symbol of excellent co-operation between the two countries and reflects the principles for fighting effective crimes characteristic of the 21st century.
According to Minister Tahiri, today's signing gives a whole new direction to co-operation between the two countries, increasing co-operation in the field of rule of law, as well as offering prosecutors and other authorities on both sides of the Atlantic new means to bring criminals to justice.
At a preliminary meeting with Palmer, Minister Tahiri announced it for reforms undertaken in the justice system, including new criminal policies, property rights policies, as well as measures undertaken under the Aegean “Directorate 2020” to improve the performance of the justice system in Kosovo.
