OSCE Presence in Albania, OSCE Chairman of the OSCE and Foreign Minister for Europe Miroslav Lajčak, OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President George Tsereteli and OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Secretary General Roberto Montella strongly condemned the use of violence, on the part of protesters, in Albania's capital, Tirana, on May 11, 2019.
They stressed the right to rally and protest peacefully, but underlined that violence is unacceptable and that riots cannot replace democratic political engagement. We bring this statement to the fore before the May 25, 2019 protest.
The statement remains as valuable as two weeks ago. The Molotov cocktails, throwing stones and sickles are illegal; the excessive response of the rule forces cannot be accepted. We encourage present - day participants and protest leaders to be cautious. The mention of blood spill, a few days before a public protest, is incompatible with modern democracy and democratic protests.
