There is an ocean under the frozen surface in Pluton, as is the moon of Jupiter, Europe and Saturn, Encellado, according to the study published in “Nature Geoscience” by the group of Japanese universities of Hokaido, Kobe and Osakas, as well as the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
This study is the product of computer-based simulations collected from NASA probe, New Horizons”, which in 2015 fired Pluton's first photos.
According to researchers, Pluton's ocean is wrapped up and protected by a gas - free methane cage that serves as a thermal insult between the ice surface and the underground lake, protecting it from freezing.
For Japanese planetologists, this study shows that the presence of underground oceans in the solar system is more common than thought, making life - forms more likely.
