“News Agency MTI” reported that 33 people, mainly tourists from South Korea, were aboard the ship when it was hit by another ship while docking
The incident occurred on Wednesday, about 10:00 local time.
The Danube River, a popular tourist attraction, grew due to heavy rainfall, causing strong currents.
The flooded boat was identified as “Hableany”, or “Mermaid”. The ship has two decks and a capacity of 45 people for travel.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry confirmed that 19 Koreans were missing and announced it would launch an official delegation to Hungary regarding the event. They also warned that families of victims will be available to keep them informed.
Speaking at a press conference in the South Korean capital, Seoul, a spokesman for the travel agency after the group's tour, Lee Sang-moo, said at least one child was among the missing.
The rescue operation continued in the early hours Thursday, with ships, divers, lights, and other suitable equipment.
Emergency teams discovered the ruins of “Meramed” on the riverbed, after taking several hours near Margaret Bridge, local media said.
Rescue teams warned that the longer it takes, the strong currents would lead people to the current, reducing the chances of finding survivors.
National Emergency Service was researching the current from the central area of Budapest, and water traffic stopped across the Danube in southern Budapest, Reuters news agency reported.
