The mention of the name of Parliament Speaker Kadri Wessel, of the guilty has raised the concern of Civil Society organisations.
Through a reaction they have asked the latter to be transparent and to clarify to the citizens what they call “the prude”.
That's the whole Civil Society response:
By May 20th, some media screened a video that could be heard as some guilty accusers mention the name of Kosovo Parliament Speaker Kadri Wessel. On the other hand, there was no institutional response, which would clarify to citizens the reason and context of the mention of the Speaker of the Parliament in that environment. It is not the first time that Kosovo media have reported on similar cases for leaders and institutional representatives, which are then forwarded to a total lack of accountability.
Transparency and accountability to citizens are essential traits for developed democracies. Civil society organisations are committed to installing such standards and applying in Kosovo as well. In order for Kosovo democracy, even damaged by the decades-old mismanagement of public institutions not to be degraded, should not be allowed institutional silence in the face of such phenomena to turn into practice and normality.
Moreover, the fight against organised crime has been declared a priority of the Government of Kosovo. By going quietly, the mention of institutional leaders in these circumstances only goes contrary to this effort.
Based on these principles and reasons, civil society organisations call on the heads of institutions -- in this case, the head of the Parliament -- to comply with the responsibility held by holding public office, to render an account and clarify such involvement to citizens.
