The silent flight of citizens for relief from autocratic tendencies

The loud protests across the Balkans and Kosovo's silent abandonment have a common shout of citizens for release from the autocratic trends of the political scene, which have lost the hope of citizens for a better life. So said Demush Shasha, executive director at the Institute [...]
So said Demush Shasha, executive director at the Kosovo Institute for European Policy (EPIK) in the week interview. In Kosovo's case, according to him, there is great disappointment of citizens to social developments over the past two decades, Koha Ditore writes today.
“Instead of building liberal democracy, with progressive social actors based on stable and inclusive economies, a clientocracy has been installed, where the political scene captures public institutions and monopolises the private sector for the sole purpose of the ruling remnant”, Shasha, who has been serving 11 years in the field of European integration, has said.
In all of this, he says, helpless citizens have two options to stand up against him or leave the country. While in Serbia, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia have an increase in civic revolt, Kosovo “we see the handover of citizens to the established reality and the emptying of the country”.
The Changing Migratory Train
KD: Recent Reports, including Institute EPIK, developments related to the number of asylum requirements in the European Union have been addressed. What is the trend of asylum seekers from Kosovo to EU countries?
Shasha: Initially, it should be noted that, based on the EUROSTAT data, in 2018 it was recorded the continuing trend of the decline of asylum seekers in the European Union. In 2018, 638 thousand asylum seekers were registered in the EU for international protection in EU member states.
This was 10 percent less than in 2017 (712 000) and a little over half of the asylum seekers registered in 2016 when some 1.3 million asylum seekers were registered.
