A fire broke out in the famous cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and has spread rapidly throughout the building.
The cause was not immediately clear, but officials say it could be linked to renovation work.
A major operation is under way to combat the fire that broke out. An area surrounding the building in central Paris has been cleared, officials said.
French President Emmanuel Macro has cancelled his planned speech to the people for the fire of the cathedral, said an official of the Elisee Palace.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo described it as a terrible “firework” and urged people at the scene to respect the boundaries created by fire crews to ensure that they remain safe.
So horror to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Spreading water tanks could be used to put it out. Must quirkly!
