Huntke for no visa liberalisation: Touches in Wounds for Kosovars

Foundation Director Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Kosovo, Frank Huntke, has indicated that, along with political parties, they are developing a platform that priorities social welfare. You can't do one without another. We're developing a platform called [...]

You can't do one without another. We are developing a platform called Kosovo we love and all parties are invited to form an idea based on a state of social welfare, rule of law, or economic development”.

We can't do one thing and think that the rest will happen by themselves. Kosovars do not believe in their country, expect nothing from their country, have no identification with the state of Kosovo for which they have fought. And this is provocative”.

There's a lot of people trying to avoid taxes, but that means helping the state. Otherwise, the state cannot fulfill those citizens' wishes even if it wants to. There is no cooperation between citizens and state. They do not feel that politicians are doing something for them and that they are doing things without their participation. They don't want to join us, but being a politician in democracy means that you're a responsible citizen and you're fighting for what you need”.

The politicians always say these are good advice, but we're not the only ones giving them, there's a lot more. We have an action plan in June and we're going to town to talk to people about the problems they have at home and then we're going to see how politics are reacting to”.

Huntke in an interview at the Info Magazine of Kosovo said young people's interest in taking part in politics has dropped dramatically.

This is the second time we've done a study for young people. One of the points is like comparing what was six years ago. We have some bad developments in young people's political orientation, and the interest of 70 percent has dropped to 13 percent. In the past six years, there has been youth frustration and some isolation in the feeling of loneliness as a social group. Many of them want to leave the country. They say: We're studying and if we get a job we're gonna have a job with no contract and we're going to be a waiter, a taxi driver or a phone center.

We don't have a communication between the labour market. Part of the German success is that we have had two strong, academic, and unaccademic branches divided by 50 to 50. In Kosovo all go to universities and we don't have any developed economies. We need to have a policy on the job market and it's about cooperation with the” school.

Huntke said non-liberalisation of visas for Kosovars is unreasonable because Kosovo is not less corrupt than the countries of the region, and that this is an undeserved punishment.

This is a knife to the wound, it doesn't mean anything to the visa regime. I can't understand or accept it. I am aware of these discussions that people will leave when liberalisation occurs. But this discussion has also been in Poland, that Polish people would go from there. We had the same discussion in Serbia as I have seen in Albania. We've seen all those groups of people, but nothing happened to the”.

“In my view, there is no reason to maintain the visa regime because for Kosovars this is a punishment they have not deserved. Kosovo is no more corrupt than neighbouring states, there are the same shortcomings in rule of law as they are. Therefore, it cannot be said that Kosovo is at the end of this” road.

This is a psychological issue for Kosovars because it will not change anything if visas are removed. Perhaps the view will change because they will feel cheaper. It will change the outlook, and that is necessary. It will not change the economy or education”.
