In an interview for DW, the edition of the Serbian language, Beyer stresses that he expects responsible and constructive behaviour, as well as focusing on the original content of the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue framework.
This [tax] is not about specific concrete plans with specific provisions, but about information and exchange of information about regional issues. In addition, we can hope that Serbia and Kosovo will exploit this meeting constructively and discuss the normalisation process. Because if there is still a lack of seriousness for progress, the EU perspective for the two countries will remain ad acta”, Meyer said, Time broadcasts.
The German MP, who is a good connoisseur of the relationship between Kosovo and Serbia, says it is desirable that all Western Balkan countries join in a predictable future.
The “should also be said that much has been said about the proposed exchange of territories. But I wouldn't let go too much. Because changing borders on ethnic lines can cause chain response. For this reason, this proposal, from any party to come, must be refused in such a way that there is no doubt. In the worst scenario, it could be up to escalation and armed conflict”, German MP Meier said.
According to him, about the possible resolution of the Kosovo-Serbia issue, participants in this process can better speak.
Peter Beyer has recently stayed in the region, and says the talks he has conducted with state and institutional leaders have been constructive.
But what has been distributed has been the fact that actually trust in the European Union, which with its authority may be involved in the debate, has declined. This is different when we talk about Germany and possible impulses for compatible and sustainable solutions. When we see this fact, then we can find out how Monday's conference in Berlin can contribute substantially to this” process, the CDU deputy, who is also a rapporteur for the Western Balkans and for the non-economic relations, stressed.
We remember that even during their stay in Kosovo, MP Beyer, along with Christian Schmidt, German Parliament MP CSU, had strongly rejected the idea of exchanging territories.
“We have talked about future processes that are dialogue, which we support and it should develop even further for Kosovo and Serbia. We also discussed the most controversial subject in exchange for territories that Germany strongly opposes. Now in the EU parliamentary elections, we will carry out our role and be supportive partners for Kosovo's future processes, but always with a critical eye”, Peter Beyer had said after meeting with Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj in Pristina.
Leaders of the Western Balkan states will meet tomorrow in Berlin, this meeting called by Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron.
