President Recep Tayip Erdogan's party has also suffered losses in Istanbul's largest Turkish city. According to the Turkish news agency “Anadolua”, the opposition has received 48.79 per cent of the vote, while AKP 48.51 per cent.
The outcome in Istanbul is of particular significance after Erdogan has started his political career there, as mayor in the 1990s. Besides, he ran there with an important name -- that of former Prime Minister Benali Yildirim.
In Sunday's local elections, for the first time in 25 years, the AKP also lost control of Ankara. In the Turkish capital, the Republican People's Party received more than 50 per cent of the vote, with Erdogan's AKP at 47 per cent.
Erdogan has even lost the country's third largest city, Izmir city, as well as Antalya, Adana, etc.
Despite disappointing results in major domestic cities, The president's AKP, in alliance with the nationalist MHP movement, has received 51.63 per cent of the vote, while the opposition 37.55 per cent.
