“American territory on Serbian soil”

A group of journalists from Serbia, with the organisation of the Atlantic Council of Belgrade, has visited the US military base Bondsteel in Kosovo and has brought its experiences and views, of course, Serbs. Time brings, without interference, the complete script of the newspaper “Politika” from this visit.

Camp Bondsteel visited two hours at the U.S. military base preceded verification of two and a half hours at the reception.

At exactly 14:15 minutes, we're at the American base gate at Bondsteel. The highly distinctive bus that turned left a few minutes earlier, from Ferizaj-Viti Street, entered American forces' territory. We get on the bus, and then on to the first wash, the command: “go back until the officer arrives for Information Service”, commands insurrection and distress at the entrance, engaged, as we hear from US private security units. In the pistol belt, in the Navy's pants pocket radio-linking, and when we saw his eyes close, he didn't think of any additional questions.

We go back, we kill the time before the big table on which you write “Camp Bondsteel”. The monotonous, cold, autumn - over Siove, the village where the largest U.S. military base was built in 1999 after Vietnam, on the surface of 400 hectares. It was built in the country where Serbian cereals were found, on Serbian property, where, as it is heard, average cities could be fed.

The camp was built in the country that NATO had bombed in 1999, it was not contaminated, and according to some notes, even a year ago it was known that towns would be built there, miles away from Ferizaj, as the NATO forces headquarters for the eastern part of KFOR. The base was named after James Bondsteel, an American soldier in the Vietnam War, and as it goes, it's installed and it's the entire Web site in which at any moment you can hear conversations on fixed phones and mobile and all possible radio connections.

They let us in in after two and a half hours. Again we are at the entrance, where a high concrete wall is erected, and three feet [1 m] of thorns are on top of it in five rows. Belgrade editorial journalists who have come at the invitation of the Atlantic Council of Serbia are sent to the space where detectors are located, scanners and where they ask you about length, weight... where it works like an ophthalmology check... leave the traces of four fingers (strongly attached to each other), and especially leave the fingerprint. One of his colleagues even took him out.

In space, American officers change. Officer Taylor from Havana and the commander of Bondstheel base, Colonel Roy Macarag, are with us all the time.

It is at 4:45 p.m. that the order of entry arrives. The asphalted roads, which in this town are hundreds of sosh, where wooden barracks, barracks and toilets are located, get to the command of “Bandsteel”. Before us lies the cut valley of roads, observed several official vehicles, no traces of war vehicles, weapons, and weapons.

We are still under the pine eye of American soldiers even though we are on the visit with senior KFOR representatives from the film “City”.

We are in command of the Multinational Group of the East War, where last November, the Macaraeg fighter team, 29 of the Capoella Land Brigade in Havana, took command of the camp.

The unit under the leadership of Colonel Roy Macarag is part of the US Army National Guard. In the official biography given to us, he writes that he is commander of the Multinational War Group in the East, while before taking over Bondsteel's commandership, he was the principal financial manager and that under his care it was a budget of $16 billion. The first military function was at Spirhead's U.S. military base in Kuwait, worked at the National Guard office and the Pentagon after taking the Colonel's rank, was one of five deputy deputy Army Secretary of Defence.

It was introduced to reporters and said the mission of American soldiers is in line with UN Resolution 1244. He declined to comment on political issues, but said the “Interaction of the Kosovo Security Force is minimal”.

Even though the journalist of “Policics “with maj, why in Kosovo exclusively send American soldiers, when you know well that there and you're not very welcome?

I was not surprised, quietly the military replied:

There are mostly Americans, but there are soldiers from Austria, Slovenia, Poland...”

Answers also in “technical questions”. He says there are 800 soldiers in Bondsteel. I didn't exactly measure as many tanks, helicopters and if there's satellite surveillance.

According to unofficial notes on Bondsteel should be about 20 helicopters “Black Hakck” and “Apach”, dozens of tanks “Abrams A-22”...

After 15 minutes, with traditional greeting “aloha”, we arrive at the runway where the transport helicopter “Black Hakk” is waiting. The price of a helicopter like this is $18 million.

Roy Hide, a medical evacuation commander, explains in detail what the helicopter is serving because there were Sanitors on the runway, who in six months had seven calls. Two have been from Macedonia, five from Pristina.

We have 15 minutes to prepare once we're called. In 25 to 30 minutes, we can reach any place in Kosovo”, explains Hide, who is assisted by the pilot, Staff Sergeant Billy Blackbar.

Not far from the flying track is the helicopter surveillance tower. You can't see the famous <x0).

It's raining all the time. We walk the asphalt, but we also walk the short road with gravel. “Bundsteel”, which would translate into “steel interconnection”, is built in a suitable location so that it can be related to bases in the US, Aviano, Vincenzo... but also because of the military communication centre with high technology, to exchange information, not only from the region, but from the parts covering the entire Balkans and the Middle East. Here lies the most modern communication system that can connect American troops around the world.

So, at least it's spoken, because not even a piece of the truth about Bondstell you won't hear here, the place where informants who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq are working.

As we hear these stories, I again see the sight of the Albanian accused of terrorist attack near Podujevo and released, who managed to escape from Camp Bondsteel through the ventilation pipes in the kitchen a few years ago. It's unclear that he was able to escape the marines who are 24 hours away on surveillance and who are keeping everything on the mark. You can be killed any minute.

All Bondstheel's on video surveillance, so it's not good not to listen to the guards.

Down the street, nobody alive. Neither before the cinema nor before the Church North Hat or the “Burger King”, the chisk with the appointment “Pizza Antonella”... Not even in the two-story store of goods where, in the XXkovveto for release of brand “Michel Corse”, it stands prominently “produced in China”.

To our great surprise, the famous American boots that run all the marines, but even a large part of the high-ranking soldiers in KFOR, could not be bought. Everything is possible, but for boots there's”, we've accepted the answer with disappointment.

We are under two-hour surveillance by the officer from KFOR headquarters in Pristina, but also by Hawaiian officers. There's no movement or escape from the established march. Photo of wooden objects for temporary use, such as lodges in Cuba at the well - known Gulf base in Guantanamo.

He's already started visiting evening, but he's out of time. We walk along the road, bypassing “zebra” on the asphalt road, leaving a little bit of a way off the “autobus of the city”. There are workers, local staff, Albanians. All the maintenance, besides preparing food, is in the hands of local residents.

On the way out, once again the legitimacy. The Marines' view of the travel document and you... The mistake happens. Thus, “Policics journalist” received the colleague's ID.

We're both blondes. It's not exactly what they're talking about.

But sure is that the <x0th state of America and the American Army do not bear any responsibility during your stay at the” base.
