The teacher of physics and mathematics from a Kenyan village, which donated 80% of its monthly salary to helping the poor, has won a $1 million prize.
Peter Tabichi, who is also brother at the French order, received the Varker Foundation award for the World Teachers' Award Sunday, writes Periscope.
He teaches rural Pwan school, with only one computer that has slow internet and 58 students in class. Nearly all students come from poor families, and about a third are orphans or are just one parent.
Tabichi receives educational content by visiting internet cafes and using them offline in class, according to his account from the Varkey Foundation.
He also leads the school science club, in which students now compete in national and international competitions. The math team qualified to compete in an international competition in Arizona of the United States. His students also won a prize from the Royal Chemical Society after they managed to generate electricity through plants. /Periscopi
