German Foreign Affairs Minister Heiko Maas has today defended his country's involvement in air strikes in Serbia during the Kosovo conflict 20 years ago.
“Ende continues to believe that Germany's involvement was part of a series of responsible actions”, Maas declared today to the daily “Stutgarter Nachrichten”.
He said military actions may only be the last resource, but added that “at the time we had evidence of massive human rights violations, up to the mass murder”.
I believe NATO was right to intervene. I don't want to think about what could have happened if it hadn't had an interference of”, Maas stressed.
NATO began shelling on 24 March 1999 to end the violence of the Serbian armed forces against Kosovo Albanians.
