One in ten new cases of psychosis diagnosis is estimated to be related to the use of cannabis, according to a study by the Royal College of London.
Daily use of any kind of cannabis also increases the risk of showing this mental disorder, according to a study published in The Lancet Psychiatry.
Experts say cannabis users should be aware of the potential health risk, although the study should not be understood as final proof that the use of cannabis is harmful.
“If you decide to use strong cannabis, remember that the danger exists”, said leading researcher and psychiatrist Marta di Forti.
Dr. Adrian James of the Royal College says that the results of the study should be understood seriously.
People who suffer from psychosis lose touch with reality may get confused and hear voices or see things that do not exist. Psycho is a medical illness and differs from the symptoms people have when they're getting drugged.
There are disagreements about the degree to which cannabis can deteriorate or cause problems in people who suffer from mental illness.
Many countries have legalized the use of cannabis. Doctors are concerned about increasing the use of high-power cannabis, which has a higher THC level.
A cannabis in the form of a 14-percent THC scan makes up 94 per cent of the drugs sold in the streets of London, experts say.
The study was conducted in 11 European Union towns and a region in Brazil. The study included 901 people who experienced at least one psychosis episode and 1,237 people who had no similar attacks.
