This discovery was made by research by Sydney University, published in Cell Reports. However, this study repeatedly points out that this food regime should not be exaggerated by quantity.
This research is the first to point out that low protein diets with high carbs content have protective advantages for the brain, similar to food regimes that predict a reduction of calories, studied for years for their life expectancy benefits.
One of the main sources of carbs is “sweet pathat”. Researchers have, in effect, fed rats with complex carbs, cut out from the top and protein of cheese and milk.
They've focused on the hippocamus, the brain area responsible for understanding and memory. Hippocampus is usually the first area of the brain to be affected by neuro-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.
A diet rich in carbs and with fewer proteins seems to promote health in the mouse hippocampus. It remains to be seen whether the same change will be reflected almost similarly in people.
