The death toll in Mozambique from the Idai Cyclone may be up to 1,000, President Philippe Nyus said.
Nyus went to some of the hardest hit areas Monday. The president said he saw troops sailing through the rivers.
The great storm landed near the port city of Beira on Thursday with winds of up to 177 km / h. But the rescue teams could only arrive Sunday.
The BBC reports that all buildings in Beira, home to half a million people, have been damaged.
“Every building is affected. There is no power, telecommunications and roads are filled with electricity wires”, said Gerald Bourke, from the UN World Food Programme.
The official death toll in Mozambique is 84. All over southern Africa, at least 180 people have died.
In Zimbabwe, at least 98 people have died and 217 people have disappeared in the east and south, the government said, conveys OraNews.
Malawi has also been hit by the Cyclone.
