The Democrat governor of the U.S. State of Virginia has apologised for a racist photo that appeared in 1984's annual medical school book, amid calls for his resignation.
Governor Ralph Northam said he's due to “and unfortunately for the decision I've made to appear in this photograph and the pain this decision has caused then and now”.
The photograph, which was originally published by the conservative Big League Polytics website, was shown by two people, one having black-coloned faces, while the other was wearing the clothes of the Ku Klux Klan group. It wasn't immediately clear which one of these people was Northam.
Senior Democrat officials in Virginia, but even Democrat senators have called for Northam to resign.
However, in the media statement, Northam has hinted that he wants to continue his job as governor, confirming my absolute <x0ndage to work according to the expectations of Virginia's citizens, who decided for me when they chose me to become their governor”.
Northam was elected governor in 2017. If he resigns, then the governor's mandate will be taken by Justin Fairfax, who in 2017 became the second African to win state office in Virginia.
