He made these comments while attending the People's Voice conference about “GreatFinales” between Kosovo and Serbia, organised by the Research Institute for European Affairs and Development (RIDEA).
Thaci said an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia would bring peace. He said there has been a deterioration of reports in recent months.
The “in recent months has deteriorated reports between the two countries. I have no doubt that if no agreement is reached this year, we will enter a dangerous zone for the two countries that will undermine stability in the region. The recognition between the two states is the key that opens the doors and normalises relations. From the letters coming from America, we have received guarantees that this historic agreement between the two countries implies recognition between the two states”, Thaci said.
“ ...for more than a year we are discussing the most important process we have as a state. We all know well that dialogue with Serbia for normalisation is inevitable and necessary. We want to permanently clarify the relationship between two countries. It was 20 years since the war ended, Kosovo and Serbia have not yet reached literal agreements that would make peace. Over a century we've had hostility, but now it's time to leave the enmity behind to make comprehensive deals. I base this conclusion on three arguments, the option of maintaining the status quo is wrong and unstable, this status is going back”, he said.
He has said that a phase of not easy dialogue awaits Kosovo in the talks in Brussels.
We cannot have greater guarantees than those words from the United States. When it comes to formal recognition, I'm telling you I'd be the happiest person in the world if it was done without fresh talks. Not easy talks in Brussels await us. I've read carefully the report prepared by Reed, my impression is that the citizens' opinion coaxes well with our political assessments. This is an encouragement.
