Political analyst Daniel Server considers that Macedonia will start negotiations on membership in the European Union in June, and for five years it will be toward the end of the membership process.
Server is a professor of international studies at the “Johns Hopkins” and a good expert on events in the Balkans. “I am not in the predictive business, but I consider that the most realistic is for Macedonia within five years to be at the end of the EU membership process”, the Server told MIA.
He added that this would depend greatly on the stabilisation of the local political climate that would enable long-term implementation of reforms. “In terms of EU membership, Macedonia is facing two challenges, implementation of Akissı (general mandatory rights and obligations in all EU member states), as well as independence of the trial. If these reforms, the so-called resistant pillars of a construction, are implemented over time, Macedonia is on a safe path to become an EU member”, the Server said.
