The causes of depression remain unknown to science.

Research with brain image technologies, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), shows that the brain of depressed people seems different from that of those without depression. Parts of the brain responsible for humor, thought, sleep, appetite, and behavior seem to function abnormally.
