Young people from Serbia, Kosovo come together, condemn Vuciqi rhetoric for Recak massacre

Young People's Initiative for Human Rights ( YIHR Kosovo) and Youth Initiative for Human Rights Serbia ( YIHR Serbia) strongly condemns Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic's statement concerning the denial of the massacre in Recak. On January 15th 1999, Serbian forces killed 44 Albanian civilians in the village of Recak. The OSCE Verification Mission, led by US Ambassador William Walker, called it “a crime against humanity”.
Recak's massacre was also part of Slobodan Milosevic's indictment before The Hague's Tribunal, but no act of contempt had been issued due to his death during the trial process.
Vuciq claimed that “everything was invented by that world fraud, manufacturer and opportunist, Walker”.
This statement is unacceptable. Such an unbeliever rhetoric violates the dignity of victims and their families, while against the values of peace, reconciliation and justice. We call on President Vuciq to apologise and prevent denial of war crimes committed in Kosovo and the region by the Milosevic regime”, the joint declaration of these two initiatives said.
Also, Y The IHR Kosova and Serbia call on all political leaders in Serbia and Serbian political leaders in Kosovo to distance themselves from such extremist statements and to call on citizens to recognise, respect and engage in the achievement of justice for all victims, survivors of sexual violence and undiscovered persons from the war in Kosovo.
“We, as young people from Kosovo and Serbia, will always stand against denying war crimes. We are determined to continue to oppose nationalist narativas and will constantly work on building peace and reconciliation between Kosovo and Serbia”, the communique concludes.
