Authorities say the National Population Record will create a list of all people living in the country and help formulate certain policies.
Critics say, however, that this will be a list in which suspicious <x0] citizens will be required to prove they are Indian.
More than 20 people have died in protests on the law on citizenship, the BBC writes, translates Periscopi.
The authorities of this country have said the purpose of this census was to create a comprehensive identity database for all <x0).
A common <x0).resident” is a person who has lived in an area of the country for at least six months or one who plans to live in an area of the country for at least six months or more. This implies that even foreigners living in India will be included in the census.
The controversial part of the law concerns the Muslim community, consisting of over 200 million people.
The law offers amnesty to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The government says it has done so to protect religious minorities from persecution.
Thus, citizenship is guaranteed according to religion but not if these people belong to Islam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has defended legislation in question, insisting that Muslims in India “do not have to worry” about the law, even after the death of 20 people. /Periscope
