Historically, the answer has been Spanish, given the number of countries in the world that speak it. However, recent studies prefer French, German, and Mandarin.
The Economic Centre for Business, Research and Opinion in collaboration with Heathrow Airport has surveyed 2,001 parents and children under the age of 18, along with a study of more than 500 business leaders around Great Britain.
45% of parents said their children do not speak a second language, while 19% said they are not interested in learning a second language.
One in 10 said that their children find learning new languages very difficult.
Researchers found that French, German, and Mandarin are the three languages children will have to learn to benefit their lives in ten years.
Language skills are expected to increase the economy by 2027.
Professor of Development Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh and Director of Dylingual Affairs Antonella Sorace said:
This research shows how important language learning is in the United Kingdom economy and shows that many more doors are opened to people who learn a second language as children.
“We believe language learning is extremely useful for children's development and is a real investment for the future: children who are exposed to different languages become more aware of different cultures, other people and other views. ”
They also tend to be better than monolinguists at the Shumultiskingʹ and often are more advanced readers. Language gives children far more than just two languages, so it is wonderful to see that Heathrow is helping to encourage children to learn languages.
