European Commission spokeswoman Ana Pisonero has said that “is up to courts to determine whether the statements constitute criminal acts. Punishment must be proportional and take into account all elements of the” case.
Pisonero has also stressed that authorities must work for an honest and true assessment of the past to respect the victims.
“One thing is clear, there is no room to deny or relativise events that took place in Recak, Kosovo, in January 1999. Denial and revisionism are contrary to European Union values and are contrary to the Western Balkans' integration project in the European Union”, Pisonero has said, adding that the region needs reconciliation, stability and normalisation of relations.
Serbian President Vuciq's statement was a response to the Pristina Constitutional Court decision, which based on Article 147 of the Kosovo Criminal Code, has sentenced former Kosovo Government Minister Ivan Todosijevic to two years in prison from the ranks of the Serbian List.
The latter, on March 24th 2019, at a rally of Serbian citizens in Zvecan against NATO intervention, had publicly said that the “Masacre of Recak was fiction” and that the Albanian “terrorists forged all of this”.
