US Senators Seek Special Law on Hong Kong

Two senior U.S. senators have launched a process today so that the Senate can speed up the adoption of the law by which the United States will decide on a special check on Hong Kong's status, as a sign of support for pro-democracy demonstrations in the China-led city. Committee Chief [...]
Head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Republican Jim Rich and Senator Marco Rubio want to unanimously approve “The Law of Human Rights and Democracy in Hong Kong”.
The act would require the State Secretary to confirm at least once a year that Hong Kong still has enough autonomy to ensure particular compensation for American trade.
He would also foresee sanctions against officials responsible for human rights abuses in Hong Kong.
The announcement came as a result of increased violence during months of protests in the Chinese government city.
If the law is passed in the Senate, the move will not immediately be forwarded to President Donald Trump for signing, but must be harmonised with the law adopted by the House of Representatives last month.
